jon philpott (a.k.a fezmaster) is a synth builder, coder and improvising trombonist and flautist based out of Utah. self-publisher of tapes, incubator of automata, generator of procedural generators, and award winning procrastinator (no actual award given, decided to do something else.) making music that’s somewhere at the intersection of ambient and lo-fi (except for that one d&b release i did, it was fun.) host of SLC’s sunday drip.
A fezmaster show is an experience in teleportation and time travel. I try to build soundscapes and melodies to bring people that experience of travelling somewhere that both feels new yet familiar and comforting at the same time. This is done through my home-made and hand-built custom synthesizers and are quite often making these sounds generatively through random or evolutionary processes while I improvise melodies along side it on trombone or bamboo flute.
The product of this that each show is a unique experience in which neither the audience or myself know what’s coming next and a great combination of art, technology and music.

about “fezmaster”
silly name, im a big fan of Mix Master Mike, and was into turntablism - you can hear some sc-sc-scr-scratching on my early releases like red and travelcard. I’m also a fan of Tommy Cooper who wore a fez for comedic value, and also ska superstars Madness where Fezes (or is Fez plural?) often made an appearance. I would often wear a fez at some of my shows because it was hard to take yourself seriously when wearing a silly hat. Thats where the name came from and it’s sort of stuck.
